Additional suspect in custody in South Austin homicide investigation

Police said 45-year-old Leroy Garza allegedly murdered Benito Luna-Vargas back in March.

AUSTIN, Texas — Following previous arrests in a murder investigation, police said a man accused of stabbing and killing another man in South Austin back in March is in custody.

After a continued investigation, police said they found 45-year-old Leroy Garza as the man that allegedly stabbed Benito Luna-Vargas during a confrontation in an apartment at the 1200 block of Southport Drive on March 24, 2019.

Jessica Romero was also arrested as a part of this investigation by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force earlier this year. She has been charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony.

Police were called to the 1200 block of Southport Drive, near 290 and Clawson Road on Saturday night, after reports a man had been beaten and left unconscious.

When officers arrived just after midnight, they found two injured men.

Benito Luna Vargas, 34, was transported to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, where he later died.

The second victim was also transported to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center. He has since been treated and released.

Witnesses told police two women and a man had entered a residence and assaulted the two victims while demanding valuables.

According to witnesses, the heavyset Hispanic man allegedly pulled a knife out of his pocket and stabbed Vargas in the chest.

After stabbing Vargas, witnesses said the man left the apartment and the heavyset Hispanic woman began punching Vargas in the chest before also leaving the apartment with the other woman.

Romero was reportedly with the heavyset Hispanic woman in her late 20s to 30s and Garza has been named as the heavyset Hispanic man.

An autopsy on Sunday morning confirmed the cause of Vargas’ death to be homicide.
