New hotel planned for historic Green Pastures site in South Austin

A design firm hopes to build a three-story hotel on the Green Pastures property.

AUSTIN, Texas — Editor's note: The video above is regarding a wedding venue in South Austin that is planning to close due to high property taxes.

A new hotel is in the planning stages for a historic property located in South Austin.

Clayton & Little – a design firm – plans to build the hotel at Green Pastures, a property with a historic home at 811 W. Live Oak St. in South Austin. Built in 1916, a farmhouse on the property was converted into a restaurant, which was known as Green Pastures before taking the name, Mattie's.

The firm hopes to construct the three-story hotel at the south end of the lot, according to an application submitted to the Historic Landmark Commission

The application outlines the detailed preliminary plans for the hotel, which would partially encircle an outdoor pool. The designers plan to create a contemporary hotel that uses muted dark colors, "which the applicants propose will help make the building fade into the landscape, but also to highlight the prominence of the white historic landmark building on the property," the application states.

The designers said the new hotel will be placed in an area with tree cover, "which will help screen it from the historic building," the application stated.

"Green Pastures was a private residence of a prominent Austin family, then became a restaurant and event center, mostly hosting weddings," the application stated. The application suggests that the new hotel is not an anomaly to the current use of the property.

At the Historic Landmark Commission's Dec. 16 meeting, it was stated that the design of the hotel is more commercial than residential. It was recommended to the design firm that they "continue thinking of ways to make the presence of the new hotel more compatible with the residential character of the property," the application stated.

Blueprints for the plan can be found online.
