Police identify victim of fatal crash on Highway 71 near the 'Y'

The crash happened at the 8700 block of West State Highway 71 on Friday.

AUSTIN, Texas — Editor's note: The video above was published after KVUE looked into big changes that are planned for the "Y" in Oak Hill.

Police have identified a man killed in a crash near the "Y" in Oak Hill in South Austin on Friday morning.

Cody Allen Faust, 27, was killed after his Toyota Camry crossed into the opposite lanes and struck a Jeep Grand Cherokee head-on just before 7 a.m.

He was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center, where he died at 12:45 p.m., police said on Tuesday.

The driver of the Grand Cherokee and the passenger in the Camry were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash, which happened on Highway 71 at Covered Bridge Drive, closed all lanes of the highway at that location. Drivers were urged to consider alternate routes. Shortly before noon, all lanes of the highway reopened.

The Austin Police Department said STAR Flight responded to the crash.

The "Y" at Oak Hill is where highways 71 and 290 meet. KVUE reported in October that big changes are being planned for the dangerous intersection.

First, the City of Austin said a developer with plans to build along Old Bee Caves Road plans to put a light up. On a much larger scale, there's the Oak Hill Parkway Project. Texas Department of Transportation's answer to the congestion at the "Y" will also change the dynamic at Old Bee Caves.

Anyone with any information on the crash is asked to contact police at (512) 974-4278.
