Pay It Forward: Tom Cottar, a man who is helping feed thousands of Central Texas kids

He's the founder of an organization called BackPack Friends.

AUSTIN, Texas — This month KVUE is introducing you to Tom Cottar, a man who bet on himself to make a real difference in his community by helping feed thousands of kids in need in the Pflugerville, Round Rock and Georgetown areas.

He's done this through an organization called BackPack Friends. It's a growing organization that, over the weekends, feeds students who normally can't afford to eat when they're not in school.

"A handful of years ago, there's a girl down the street, a 16-year-old high school student, who passed out in her English class one Monday morning. After some investigation, they discovered she just hadn't had anything to eat over the weekend," Cottar said.

This opened Cottar's eyes and fueled his desire to create this organization. He helps bag food and make sure students go home with it every weekend.

BackPack Friends now works hand-in-hand with just under a dozen schools. And he's done this all in a year's time.
