Second body found in search for missing Lake Travis swimmers

They went missing on Aug. 28.

AUSTIN, Texas — The bodies of two missing swimmers have been found in Lake Travis, the Travis County Sheriff's Office said.

The sheriff's office said one of the swimmers was found at around 2 p.m. Sept. 3 using sonar at a depth of 144 feet.

He is one of two men who were reported missing on Lake Travis on Aug. 28. Austin-Travis County EMS said medics responded to the water rescue call at approximately 5:37 p.m. in the area of 1403-1601 Hurst Creek Road that day.

ATCEMS said 911 callers reported two missing swimmers on the lake, and lake patrols were unable to find them. ATCEMS said the search transitioned into recovery mode at approximately 6:15 p.m. that day after an "extensive search" of the area by lake patrols.

The second body was found on Sept. 5 at a depth of 148 feet, also using sonar.

Officials said a family from Houston had rented a boat to spend the day at Lake Travis. They said one family member began to struggle in the water and another jumped in to rescue him. Neither men resurfaced.

A total of 10 swimmers have now been reported missing on Lake Travis this year. All of which have been recovered.

On Sept. 16, officials also found the body of a man who was reported missing on Lake Travis on Aug. 7 He was found in a depth of about 110 feet.

"Locating the missing man and making the recovery was dangerous and challenging due to brush, trees, and a steep ledge in that area," the sheriff's office said.

He was reported missing around 7 p.m. on Aug. 7 near Starnes Island and North Shore. Witnesses said he was treading water near a large floating tube waiting for friends to hop off so he could get on. He was last seen several feet from the tube without a life jacket. A wave reportedly went over the swimmer and he did not resurface.

Officials are urging everyone to be safety cautious and to wear life jackets when boating and getting into the water.

"It’s the one thing guaranteed to give swimmers a chance for rescue if there’s an emergency," the sheriff's office said.
