AUSTIN, Texas — It's early February, but today is feeling more like late April or early May for Central Texas. Afternoon temperatures today will spike just ahead of a cold front, and record warmth will be possible for the Austin area.
The current forecast calls for a high of 84 degrees in Austin. This would break the existing daily record of 83 from back in 1957. The daily record for the airport today is 84 degrees.
Thursday will also be quite breezy with a southwest wind becoming north at around 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts. Two cold fronts will actually pass through Central Texas today. The first front will begin the wind shift, and the second front will begin bringing in cooler air by this evening.
However, prior to the cooldown, we're looking at widespread upper 70s to mid-80s for Central Texas today. This front should pass through without providing any rain.
Behind the fronts, there will be about a 20-degree drop in temperatures for Friday. Highs will be in the low to mid-60s with afternoon sunshine following some morning clouds.
We're still looking at highs in the 60s over the weekend with another weak front set to move through Saturday into Sunday. This front does not look like it will provide any rain.
Although we're talking record heat, winter does not look like it will go out without a fight. In fact, the long-range computer models are showing the potential for a pretty significant cooldown by Wednesday of next week.
It's still a way's out so this is subject to change, but the current forecast has dropped highs to low 50s for Wednesday, and it's possible temperatures could stay quite chilly through the rest of the week.
We'll be able to provide more details as the forecast comes into focus, but for now, you can see a pretty high likelihood of cooler-than-average temperatures on the 6- to 10-Day Temperature Outlook from the Climate Prediction Center.
