Seeing red: Why the bus lane on Lavaca Street is getting a makeover

Austin Transportation is adding improvements to Lavaca and Guadalupe Streets to ease traffic flow.

AUSTIN, Texas — Wonder why you're seeing red while driving down Lavaca Street? Austin Transportation painted the new bus lanes on Lavaca in order to improve traffic flow as part of Capital Metro's contraflow project in the area.

The effort will convert one southbound traffic lane on Guadalupe Street into a separated, northbound bus-only lane for one block between 18th Street and MLK Boulevard.

The transit lane is designed to make it easier for buses to continue north from Lavaca Street onto Guadalupe near the UT Campus.

The red paint will be applied on Lavaca between 15th and 18th Streets.

Additional improvements regarding bike lanes and sidewalks will also soon be added to the area.
