Austin police join local youth for multi-sport clinics

More than 150 youth will join Austin Police Department officers for multi-sport clinics at LBJ Early College High School.

AUSTIN, Texas — Friday, a track & field-themed clinic was held in town with instruction led by USA Track & Field Olympian Michelle Carter and World Champion Kori Carter.

The event was hosted by the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and Group 1001 and is aimed to reshape the relationship between law enforcement and local children using the power of sports to build bridges and keep children active and healthy.

On Tuesday, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation hosted a 'Badges for Baseball' multi-sport clinic with 75 youth from Austin program sites and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area.

'Badges for Baseball' is a juvenile crime prevention program created by the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice.

The concept of having these two different groups interact is quite simple: pair law enforcement and at-risk youth together to play and learn from one another. The program reshapes the relationship between law enforcement and children in communities across the country.

In 2018, this program impacted more than 1,070 at-risk youth with the help of 110 law enforcement officers and other professional youth mentors throughout Texas.

The event was held at LBJ Early College High School from 9 a.m. until noon.
