AUSTIN, Texas — Editor's note: This blog is no longer being updated. Click here for a timeline of this weekend's cold front.
Austin fell just one degree short of the daily record Wednesday afternoon with a high of 81 degrees. But we still have two more shots at record warmth with more low 80s for both this afternoon and Friday. Thursday, Austin should hit 82, which will tie a record for this day, dating back to 1924.
The breeze has picked up noticeably since earlier in the week, and this has helped to stir up the air enough to prevent the widespread dense fog from earlier in the week. So, we're not expecting widespread dense fog for Wednesday night and Thursday night, but patchy areas of fog and drizzle still can't be ruled out along with abundant cloud cover and a few light showers.
A big switch-up arrives in time for the weekend with a strong cold front set to move through Friday night. This front will bring not just a big cooldown but also a chance for widespread rain and storms Friday night into Saturday morning.
A brisk north wind behind the front will quickly usher in cooler weather. High temperatures will likely take place in the early morning and then drop to the 50s and 40s by the second half of the day on Saturday.
Another weak disturbance could bring some more scattered showers Sunday into Monday before drier weather returns Tuesday. Rainfall totals of a half-inch to 1 inch look possible but will need to be fine-tuned as we get closer to the weekend.
An early look ahead to next week shows relatively seasonable weather with highs in the mid to upper 60s by Tuesday and Wednesday.
The KVUE Storm Team will continue to monitor this developing forecast.
