Don't worry: The cold weather probably won't hurt the bluebonnets

Many people were wondering if the bluebonnets are in danger from the recent cold temperatures.

AUSTIN, Texas — The state flower of Texas is starting to bloom! And this year is expected to have one of the best wildflower seasons in nearly a decade.

But with the cold temperatures that have recently rolled in, many people are wondering if the bluebonnets are in danger.

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center said that bluebonnets are pretty hardy — just like Texans. The flowers have adapted to the temperature swings.

Even if it does freeze, the bluebonnet tips will break off and grow back. Low to mid 20's might damage the plants, but it all depends on how long the cold temperatures last.

Overall, employees at the Wildflower Center think the bluebonnets should be just fine.

So, don't worry if you haven't been out to see any bluebonnets just yet! You still have plenty of time.
