Here are road closures to be aware of during UT Austin commencement, convocation

Ceremonies are being held from Thursday through Saturday, and various Austin roads will be temporarily closed as a result.

AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas at Austin graduating class is preparing to walk across the stage this week as they celebrate officially receiving their degrees.

As convocation and commencement get underway, some Downtown Austin roads will be temporarily shut down as a result.

Ceremonies are scheduled from Thursday through Saturday, and various street closures are set for each day as more visitors are expected across campus.

Thursday road closures

From 3 to 11 p.m. Thursday, Robert Dedman Drive will be closed between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and the south end of Deloss Dodds Way, near the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Clyde Littlefield Drive will also be shut down between Robert Dedman Drive and Interstate 35, as well as 20th Street between Robert Dedman Drive and San Jacinto Boulevard.

During this time, the College of Liberal Arts and Dell Medical School will be hosting commencement ceremonies at the Moody Center and Lady Bird Johnson Auditorium, respectively.

Friday road closures

The following day, 12 colleges are honoring students across campus at the Moody Center, Gregory Gym and Hogg Memorial Auditorium.

Drivers can expect closures from 6 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Robert Dedman Drive, Clyde Littlefield Drive and 20th Street, between the same sections as these roads on Thursday.

The only additional shut down is set to impact 21st Street between the eastbound lanes of Guadalupe Street and San Jacinto Boulevard. 

Saturday road closures

Saturday is set to be the busiest day for students, with 16 convocation ceremonies followed by a commencement ceremony involving all colleges in the evening.

This final celebration is set for 7:30 p.m. at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, with six total traffic closures throughout the day.

From midnight to 10 p.m., the following roads will remain closed, according to UT:

  • Robert Dedman Drive between Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Dean Keeton St.
  • San Jacinto Boulevard between Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and 24th St.
  • DeLoss Dodds Wau between San Jacinto Blvd. and Robert Dedman Dr.
  • Clyde Littlefield Drive between I-35 and Robert Dedman Dr.
  • 20th Street between San Jacinto Blvd. and Robert Dedman Dr.
  • 21st Street between Guadalupe St. and San Jacinto Blvd. will be eastbound only.
  • Trinity Street between DeLoss Dodds Wy. and Robert Dedman Dr.

In order to help manage the influx of vehicles on campus, members of the UT Police Department and Austin Police Department will be present to direct traffic.

Looking for places to park? Twelve indoor garages will be available for free through 11:59 p.m. Saturday, excluding the Conference Center Garage (CCG) and Nueces Garage (NUG).
