AUSTIN, Texas — Many of the stars from Netflix's 'The Highwaymen' showed up in Austin Sunday night for their SXSW film screening, with several stopping to talk about the importance of Texas in the film.
'The Highwaymen' is a crime film directed by John Lee Hancock that has its worldwide premiere on March 29.
Woody Harrelson and Kevin Costner star in the film and were in Austin for its red carpet.
Hancock talked about the significance of Texas in the film and the type of detailed research his team did to write the story.
"It's a Texas story, and there's just no better place to expose the movie to the world than right here," Hancock said.

Hancock also said he wishes he could have filmed more of the movie physically in Texas, but there were some obstacles that kept him from doing so.
"I understand with no state income tax that there's less of an opportunity for it to trickle down to people," Hancock said. "I get that. It's easier for Georgia, Louisiana and New Mexico because they have state income tax."
Kevin Costner also spoke at the red carpet, talking about how many times he's been in Austin for many different reasons.
"I've had good things happen to me here," Costner said. "I've made a couple movies here. 'Fandango.' 'A Perfect World.' Texas is a state all unto itself. The history here is something that I've obviously responded to in the past with my westerns and now, this particular movie. Being able to have the premiere here makes a lot of sense, and I'm glad somebody had the good sense to do it."
