Austin looking to hire hundreds of lifeguards for summer 2020

The 'Hiring Day' event on Thursday is the first of many the Parks and Recreation Aquatics Department will hold in order to fill 750 positions.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin Parks and Recreation wants to get ahead of the summer season and staff their pools early. 

The Aquatics Division is holding the first of many "Hiring Day" events this Thursday. Potential employees will complete an application and interview and register for the required training. 

There are a total of 750 positions available, including lifeguards, swim instructors, coaches and cashiers.

Last year, the department began offering lifeguards a starting salary of $15 per hour and accrued paid sick time to attract more people to the job.

Applicants do not require any prior experience, according to the department. They will get the appropriate training once hired. 

In addition to the pay, staff will receive free bus passes to make the commute possible for everyone, the department stated.

Applicants between the ages of 15 to 16 years old are required to have a parent present during the interview. Applicants who are 17 will require parent signatures on the applicant paperwork.

Make sure to bring acceptable forms of identification.

The department will host additional hiring events in April and May.
