Police identify victim of deadly crash on FM 969 in East Austin

According to APD, a drunk driver was speeding when he hit another car that was turning.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police have identified the victim of a deadly crash that happened in East Austin on Saturday.

APD tweeted at 5:15 a.m. Saturday morning that officers were on the scene of a crash in the 7900 block of FM 969, near U.S. 183 and the Travis County Expo Center.

Calvin Charles Bench, 36, was exiting a driveway in the 7800 block of FM 969 and attempting to turn when his car was hit by another driver.

Bench was pronounced dead on the scene. The other driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The other driver was arrested for DWI, but his intoxication was not a contributing factor in the crash, APD said.

Early Saturday morning, FM 969 was closed from Sendero Hills to Decker Lane as first responders continued to investigate the crash. As of 10:15 a.m., the road had been reopened.
