WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas — Authorities in Williamson County are investigating after a teen died Thursday evening.
The Williamson County Sheriff's Office said its Organized Crime Unit was called out to Round Up Drive in Liberty Hill around 7 p.m. regarding the death of a 17-year-old.
Details are limited at this time, but authorities said the 17-year-old died from suspected fentanyl poisoning and that an active investigation is ongoing.

The sheriff's office wants to urge residents to educate themselves on the dangers of fentanyl and to take proactive measures to protect themselves.
In December 2023, law enforcement saw an unsettling spike in fentanyl poisonings after deputies responded to five calls within one week, which resulted in two deaths.

Last year, the sheriff's office announced a task force aimed at educating Williamson County residents about the dangers of the drug, while prosecuting those who sell it. Agencies involved in the task force include the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Department of Homeland Security and other regional law enforcement.
