Gunman sentenced for 2019 murder of man found dead inside car in Kyle

Davonte Miller will get credit for 1,623 days in jail for a previous sentence.

HAYS COUNTY, Texas — A man convicted of murder in the deadly shooting of a man in Kyle five years ago has been sentenced.

Davonte Miller was arrested in Louisiana and charged with capital murder after Benjamin Verse was found dead in his car in Kyle in 2019.

Miller was also charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a woman was found shot multiple times near Texas State University that same year. Miller will spend the next 55 years in jail for murder and will get credit for 1,623 days already served.

What happened?

Kyle police said Verse was found dead inside a car parked outside of a closed business in September 2019.

Around that same time, Miller was suspected of opening fire on two people near an apartment complex in San Marcos, leaving a woman injured.

Miller was later arrested in Crowley, Louisiana, after he tried to get away from police. He was charged with aggravated flight from an officer and other drug charges by the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office before being returned to Hays County.
