Handbags for Hope launches campaign to reach pregnant women in crisis

Since the campaign launched 13 years ago, more than 45,500 handbags have been distributed to women in crisis across Texas.

AUSTIN, Texas — On Wednesday, Texas Advocacy Project (TAP), with support from Travis County Sheriff's Office and CommUnityCare Health Centers, launched its 2020 Handbags for Hope campaign, which will run until April 10.

The project aims to provide solutions, safety and free legal services to those experiencing domestic violence or sexual assault by distributing handbags to women in crisis.

"A women's handbag represents something deeply private to its owner – a kind of survival kit for life in a modern world," Handbags for Hope said in a statement. "For those experiencing power-based abuse, it may also serve as a life-saving utility."

Each bag is fitted with a discreet tag that lists TAP's toll-free legal line – 1-800-374-HOPE – safety planning information and Allstate Foundation's Financial Empowerment Planning Guide.

In 2019, bags were distributed to hospitals for the first time, making them available to survivors of rape. Handbags for Hope said survivors were able to carry their belongings home in a handbag instead of a plastic bag, giving them dignity and hope.

This year, the organization partnered with CommUnityCare Health Centers to reach at-risk moms-to-be, as pregnant women are particular vulnerable to domestic violence, Handbags for Hope said. Pregnant women and new mothers will receive diaper bags and be provided with tools and training from TAP.

"When victims call our legal line it is often the first time they have ever spoken with an attorney to learn that they have rights and that they can get protection and safety," said CEO Heather Bellino. "It is a life-altering moment. Handbags for Hope arms them with one of the strongest tools to break the cycle of violence – access to legal services.”
