AUSTIN, Texas — Spider House Café, located near the University of Texas at Austin campus, has permanently closed, according to KVUE's media partners at Austin360.
Austin360 reports that social media chatter indicates the café has quietly closed its doors after 25 years and the café's digital footprint has disappeared. Its website now focuses entirely on the brand's next-door music venue, Spider House Ballroom. The café's Instagram account is wiped and the bio now points users to the Ballroom's account, @ballroomtx.
Spider House's former proprietor, Conrad Bejarano, told Austin360 that there was never a closure announcement, "for the possibility of reopening." The café closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic and never reopened.
Austin360 reports that the café's location is currently empty and the front door bears a "No Trespassing" sign.
Bejarano and former business partner John Dorgan opened Spider House Café, located at 2908 Fruth St., in 1995. Bejarano was also the proprietor of I Luv Video, an indie video store that closed its last location in 2020.
According to Austin360, Bejarano cites several factors for the permanent closure of Spider House Café, including a lack of pandemic relief grants and not being able to purchase the property from the landlord.
