We've been hot and dry so far this June, but how does that historically stack up?

Triple-digit June days rank near the most all-time at Camp Mabry.

AUSTIN, Texas — You don't need a thermometer or a rain gauge to step outside and notice how hot and dry it has been in Austin throughout the month of June – or even Texas in general.

As a result of this consistently hot and dry pattern in June, a month where we don't usually see this take place as June is historically one of the wettest months in Austin, the question has to be asked: Where does it stack up on the all-time heat and rainfall lists?

Before we can truly dive into that, we need to know how often we've seen triple-digit heat at Camp Mabry. According to the National Weather Service, we have hit triple digits at Camp Mabry in 17 of the 23 days of June thus far, including Thursday, June 23.

As it stands, this would tie for second-most on the all-time triple-digit June days with 1925, and puts us within striking distance of the 2008 all-time record, which is 20.

Additionally, many would notice how dry it has been for us here in Austin so far this month. But, according to the National Weather Service, in terms of the top five driest Junes on record, we're still not quite dry enough.

We've hit 6/10 inches of rain so far this month, and while some months would have this as the driest calendar month of all time, this actually ranks as the 12th driest June of all time. The driest June being June 1911, where we did not receive a single drop of rain at all at Camp Mabry – not even a trace!

There is, however, a glimpse of hope on the horizon when it comes to relief from this heat and this lack of rainfall. It comes in the form of a weak frontal boundary coming in from the north for this weekend, which gives us meaningful rain chances, although in the range of 20-30%. Highs for the middle of next week should only be in the mid 90s with the rain chances ending for Thursday.
