AUSTIN, Texas — Despite struggling with extreme drought conditions across portions of Central Texas, December 2020 officially ranks among some of the top Decembers on record for rainfall.
Both Camp Mabry and Austin-Bergstrom Airport experienced five and six days of measurable rainfall, respectively. Several recordings mentioned tracings of precipitation, but these are not factored into daily or monthly rainfall totals as the amounts are immeasurable. Camp Mabry received a monthly total of 4.07 inches of rainfall, which is 1.67 inches above the monthly average. This ranks as the 25th wettest December on record. At Austin-Bergstrom Airport, a total of 4.40 inches of rain was recorded, which is 2.19 inches above normal, ranking it as the ninth wettest December on record.
Both sites would have fallen below average for rainfall had it not been for the active weather pattern surrounding New Year's Eve. A cold front and low pressure system brought a surge of moisture into Central Texas just in time for the end of the month. Camp Mabry received 3.23 inches of rainfall (79% of the monthly total) between Dec. 30 and the 31. Austin-Bergstrom Airport received 2.7 inches of rainfall (61% of the monthly total) in the same timeframe.
In regard to rainfall for the entire year, Camp Mabry received a total of 35.08 inches, which is 0.76 inches above average. Austin-Bergstrom Airport received 37.86 inches, which is 3.22 inches above average.
