APD makes parking, traffic changes for Blues on the Green

The Austin Police Department is expanding the area where people can't park and changing the traffic pattern to alleviate congestion for Blues on the Green.

The annual Blues on the Green concert, hosted by KGSR, attracts big crowds to Zilker Park every year. However, a lot of the people attending drive to the park, which creates a bit of a problem for the people who live nearby.

"Parking can be a bit of a hassle during the Blues on the Green," said Charles Gray who lives across the street from the park. "It's not quite as bad as Austin City Limits music festival but you've got a lot of people that are drinking and just leaving a lot of trash by the curb."

The trash is only part of the problem.

"The residential streets are a lot narrower than a regular street, so we'll have people that will double park and it basically only leaves like one lane of travel. Some of the streets are so narrow that even like a fire truck can't get down," said Austin Police Sergeant Mike Jones.

To alleviate the problem, Austin police set up no parking signs in the neighborhood. Due to the large turnout at last month's concert, police are also expanding the area where people can't park for the final two Blues on the Green concerts happening July 13 and August 3.

"Regardless of if you live in the neighborhood or you're there to go to the event, you cannot park on certain sides of the street," said Jones.

People who park in the areas despite the signs will either get a ticket or have their vehicle towed by Southside Wrecker.

"We don't want to tow cars. Believe me. It's a lot of paperwork," said Jones. "We'd rather just everybody abide by the rules there's plenty of parking in other places."

Parking is available in the Polo Field Lot and Stratford Lot at Zilker Park. People can also park at One Texas Center, Palmer Events Center, Austin High School, the State Garage or in the Ampco Systems garage. Capital Metro bus routes 3, 4, 30, 338, 484 and 803 go to the park. Pedicabs with a KGSR license plate, are also a free option.
