Texas coach Shaka Smart addresses Kerwin Roach suspension

The Texas Longhorns' leading scorer was suspended due to a team rules violation.

AUSTIN, Texas — On Monday, Texas head coach Shaka Smart addressed the media for the first time since the suspension of UT's leading scorer, Kerwin Roach.

"No update on his situation, he's still indefinitely suspended and there's nothing new to share on that," Smart said.

Roach was suspended Friday due to a violation of team rules. It's his third career suspension.

Whether or not Roach will return this season is up to Texas Athletics Director Chris Del Conte.

When asked why he is still with the program after enduring three suspensions while at UT, Shaka affirmed that Roach has made progress, and this is not a situation that would cause the program to cast him aside.

"You work with these at the age group that they're at and you understand sometimes guys are going to make mistakes," Smart said. "Sometimes guys are not all the way where you want them to be in terms of maturity."

Roach traveled with the team over the weekend to Norman, Oklahoma. However, it's not clear whether he will be with the team for the game against Baylor on Wednesday.

Tipoff for that game scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Ferrell Center in Waco.

"At the same time as your coach, you make a commitment to them to help them move towards that point and help them grow," said Smart. "So, you have to balance that with doing what's best for the team and representing the institution and athletic department."
