'Ted Cruz, you can eat here': Houston restaurant draws attention, encourages inclusion with sign

Co-owners George and Rene Reed changed the marquee out front to read, "Ted Cruz you can eat here" just days after the senator and his wife were heckled out of a DC area restaurant.

HOUSTON - At George's Pastaria, the pizza always makes a splash, but so does the sign out front.

"People come in and say, 'Great sign. We love the sign,'" said co-owner Rene Reed.

Co-owners George and Rene Reed changed the marquee out front to read, "Ted Cruz you can eat here" just days after the senator and his wife were heckled out of a D.C. area restaurant.

"We would never allow that to happen here," Reed said.

Reed says it's an example of how nasty and divisive politics have become.

"It's become juvenile, temper tantrums," Reed said. "People can't allow others to express their own opinions if they're disagreeable to them."

But at this locally owned west Houston staple, they're not scared to express their political opinion. Back in July, the restaurant raised eyebrows with a different marquee. It read "Bernie and Sarah both welcome here."

The owners of George's Pastaria are admitted conservatives, but what matters at their restaurant is not which party you vote for, but how you like your pizza.

"We have a motto inside the restaurant that says, 'Be nice or leave,'" Reed said. "If you're nice, we embrace you, and we welcome you as customers and hopefully, almost as family friends."

They're hoping the sign doesn't keep people from popping in for a bite.

"Ted Cruz has not been here," Reed said. "We would welcome Beto. We welcome everybody."
