AP calls Texas Governor race for incumbent Greg Abbott

As it turns out, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott will be sticking around in Austin after Texas voters chose him to continue on as governor instead of his competitor, Democrat Lupe Valdez, according to the AP.

AUSTIN — Voters in Texas affirmed their support of Gov. Greg Abbott (R-Texas) and are giving him another chance to lead the Lone Star State during the next four years, according to the Associated Press.

On Election Day Tuesday, Abbott received a majority of the votes compared to his Democratic challenger Lupe Valdez, a former Dallas County Sheriff, who defeated her Democratic challenger Andrew White during the May 2018 runoff election, but fell short when it came to the general election.

This is Abbott’s second consecutive win for the governor’s seat. He was sworn into office in January 2015, replacing former Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Before Abbott was Governor of Texas, he served as the “longest-serving Attorney General in Texas history and as a Justice on the Texas Supreme Court.”

On his website, Abbott lists some of his accomplishments, which include increasing the homestead exemption to help homeowners save on taxes on their homes and a 25 percent cut in the business franchise tax.

Abbott’s second term will begin in January 2019 when the legislative session begins.
