TEXAS, USA — For most Texans, there's no grocery store quite like H-E-B.

Based on a recent survey conducted by the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), H-E-B tied for best in the country this year against 19 total companies. H-E-B, Costco and Florida-based supermarket Publix all received the top spot, with 85 total points.

Coming in second place was Trader Joe's, which took the top stop in 2023. Walmart-owned Sam's Club came in third place with 83 points.

Last year, H-E-B scored 81 points, growing 5% since the previous survey.

To make the ultimate decision, the ACSI considered factors like store hours, location, meat and produce freshness quality, store cleanliness and checkout process speed. Each year since 1994, the organization has reached out to customers across the country to gather their opinions on well-known supermarket chains.

Others on the list include national chains like Target and Amazon-owned Whole Foods. There are also more localized options like Wegman's, based in New York, and Meijer, which originated in Michigan and has since been popularized throughout the Midwest.

H-E-B first opened in 1905 in Kerrville by Florence Butt. Eventually, the single store grew into a statewide chain, with more than 420 locations across Texas. In Austin alone, there are 26 H-E-B locations, with 46 in San Antonio, 21 in Houston, 10 in Corpus Christi and seven in Laredo.

There are also additional spots south of the Texas border, with H-E-B Mexico.
