Amended petition filed to remove Hays County district clerk

The petition accuses Avrey Anderson of "incompetence" and "official misconduct."

AUSTIN, Texas — An attorney in Hays County has filed an amended petition to remove District Clerk Avrey Anderson from office.

The amended petition, filed on Wednesday, follows a similar petition filed in September 2023. The amended petition now includes more examples of alleged incompetence and official misconduct from Anderson.

The petition cites Anderson's failure to send out thousands of written jury summons on several occasions, which reportedly led to delays for numerous cases and an increased backlog of jury trials.

Anderson is also accused of not sending proper grand jury indictments to accused suspects and the Hays County Sheriff's Office, as well as not sending subpoenas in a timely manner.

The petition also comes as the county attorney in Guadalupe County, which neighbors Hays County, has also filed a motion to suspend Anderson without pay.
