Person questioned, device seized following bomb threat in southwest Austin

Police seized a device they described as a rectangular object with two batteries attached.

AUSTIN, Texas — A person was taken into custody and questioned following a bomb threat in southwest Austin, according to police.

The bomb threat was reported by a delivery driver just after 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the area of Republic of Texas Boulevard, off Southwest Parkway near the Barton Creek Greenbelt.

According to police, the driver called after someone told them a bomb was found in the area. When officers arrived, they found a bag in the middle of the road and shut the area down.

Police seized a device from inside the bag that had two batteries attached, but investigators determined it was not an explosive. The driver told police the person had it, which led to the person being taken into custody and questioned. Two suitcases were also examined but determined not to contain any explosives.

Police said they're trying to determine if the incident was a false bomb threat or if someone legitimately thought they saw a bomb. No charges have been filed and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
