Top students from Austin Public Works to compete in Texas safety rodeo

This will be the second time that Austin Public Works has competed in the rodeo.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Some students with Austin Public Works are heading to Fort Worth, Texas, after qualifying for a state competition.

The City of Austin holds safety classes throughout the year but, in December, top students from heavy equipment classes competed in a local rodeo. They were scored on pre-trip inspections, dump truck loads and how they load the skid-steer for transport.

"Top winners are eligible to represent the Austin Public Works Heavy Equipment Rodeo Team at the Texas Backhoe Rodeo," the City said.

This is a competition between other cities’ public works teams.

The top students and winners from Austin include Carlos Garcia, Lionel Ceballos, Andres Mendez, Kevin Tucker and Juan Cruz. They have been preparing for the 2020 competition since last year.

The rodeo will be from Feb. 9 through 11.

This will be the second time that Austin Public Works has competed in the rodeo. Congratulations and good luck!
