AUSTIN — After a petition garnered thousands of signatures from District 9 voters, Austin Mayor Pro-Tem Kathie Tovo has secured a spot on the November ballot for re-election.
Tovo was elected to city council in 2011 and served on the last at-large city council before being re-elected in 2014 as the District 9 representative.
"Because of ambiguity about how the shift to district representation impacted term limits, Tovo decided to exercise the city charter option to secure the support of 5% of the qualified voters in her district to run for another term," her statement read.
Tovo submitted her re-election signature petition Tuesday along with a ballot application. Tovo said the petition had more than 4,700 signatures and 2,800 signatures were required. The city clerk has validated the signatures and declared the petition valid.
