AUSTIN, Texas — Sisters suing City of Austin, APD officer after fatal crash that killed mother

Two women have filed a wrongful death and vehicle collision lawsuit against the City of Austin and an Austin Police Department (APD) officer after a crash in June killed their mother.

Ana Casillas and Breana Casillas filed the lawsuit on Friday, nearly six months after their mother, 43-year-old Maria Casillas Reyes, was killed in a crash after she collided with an APD patrol unit driven by officer Alyssa Pruess. Pruess was named a co-defendant in the lawsuit.

Pruess was injured in the crash, but was later released from the hospital.

The sisters are seeking $1 million in damages, claiming wrongful death of their mother.

According to police, the crash occurred just after 5 p.m. in the 13000 block of N. US 183 northbound on June 30, between Pruess' unit and a vehicle driven by Reyes.

Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) officials confirmed shortly after arrival that Reyes died on the scene, and Pruess was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
