AUSTIN, Texas — A former Austin teacher has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a brutal assault case.
Police said Stephen Mjos beat his ex-girlfriend with a hammer back in 2016 and was charged with a second-degree felony.
Mjos learned his sentence Thursday morning.
He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary of a habitation. He received eight years in prison and five years probation following for the assault and five years probation on the burglary charge.
The sentence will run concurrent.
His ex-girlfriend suffered severe injuries, police said.
Mjos allegedly left the scene of the incident and attempted to commit suicide by jumping from a Georgetown bridge.
