Round Rock PD: Austin H.S. teacher attacked woman with hammer

Police allege Austin High School teacher attacked a woman with a hammer before attempting to commit suicide Wednesday morning.

Police allege Austin High School teacher attacked a woman with a hammer before attempting to commit suicide Wednesday morning.

Round Rock police said officers responded to the 3000 block of Joe DiMaggio Boulevard after a woman called saying her ex-boyfriend attacked her with a hammer. She was taken to a hospital with severe injuries.

The woman's alleged attacker, identified by police as Stephen Mjos, 62, had left the scene before police arrived and attempted to commit suicide by jumping from a Georgetown bridge. He is also in an area hospital with severe injuries.

Austin High's principal sent a letter to parents on Wednesday informing them "a staff member was involved in an incident and is a suspect" in an investigation.

Police have charged Mjos with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury.

Diana Vera has a sophomore at Austin High, and was shocked to hear the man accused is her daughter's chemistry teacher.

"I think it’s the craziest thing, I've actually seen him around school and I mean, he doesn't look like the type of person that would do anything like that,” said Vera.

She said her daughter loves chemistry, and can't believe this is the man who taught her.

"It's kind of scary because it makes you think twice about who is around your kid all day,” said Vera.
