APD: Man arrested after allegedly entering South Austin home naked

Police said they're unsure if the man was intoxicated or suffering from a mental crisis at the time of the incident.

AUSTIN, Texas — A man is in custody following an hourslong SWAT standoff in South Austin.

According to the Austin Police Department (APD), police received a burglary hotshot call just before 12 p.m. Wednesday at a home near Merle Drive and West Ben White Boulevard.

When officers arrived at the home, police said they learned a naked man forced his way into the home and assaulted one of the residents.

Police believe at least two people were inside the home at the time and were able to get out of the home safely. After the residents got out, the homeowner told police that there were several loaded firearms inside the home, which led to APD's SWAT team coming to the scene.

After nearly three hours, the man surrendered and was taken to the Travis County Jail, where police say he faces a felony burglary charge.

Residents in the area reported gunfire during the standoff, but police said those reports may have been caused by "distractionary" devices used by officers during the incident.

Police said they're unsure if the man was intoxicated or suffering from a mental crisis at the time of the incident.
