San Marcos to sell water to Kyle in new agreement

The cities have had similar agreements in the past, but this new one will allow Kyle to buy San Marcos's water until the end of 2026.

SAN MARCOS, Texas — The city of Kyle says it again may not have enough water to meet its needs in the future, so the San Marcos City Council has approved another agreement to sell water to Kyle.

On Tuesday, council members in both cities met to finalize the deal.

The cities have had similar agreements in the past, but this new one will allow Kyle to buy water from San Marcos until the end of 2026.

San Marcos leaders say they have enough supply and they have a new regional water share coming online in July.

"Every gallon of water that we don't use from the Edwards Aquifer is one more gallon of water in our river," Virginia Parker with the San Marcos River Foundation said.

In Kyle, council members approved paying up to $555,000 per year to buy water from San Marcos. Kyle council members voted unanimously to approve their side of the agreement, so this deal will run through 2026.
