Photographer captures the humans of Austin Pets Alive!

Florence Montmare made a stop in Austin as part of the final stage of her "photographic survey" of America.

AUSTIN, Texas — Photographer Florence Montmare is nearing the end of her long journey across America. But before she heads back to New York, she made a stop in Austin.

According to her website, at the end of October 2021, Montmare set off on a photographic survey of the U.S. to "create a visual record of the current face of America." She said she is following in the footsteps of photographers Walker Evans, Robert Frank and Richard Avedon but, as a woman and an immigrant, she hoped to share a different point of view of the country.

Montmare's journey has taken her all over America, from Newark, New Jersey, to Las Vegas, Detroit to Santa Fe, New Mexico. On Wednesday, her journey led her to Austin.

While in town, Montmare photographed random Austinites as part of her photographic survey before continuing on her journey back to New York, where her journey started.

KVUE's Pamela Comme connected with Montmare and suggested she make a stop at Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) to take photographs as a way to spotlight the hardworking employees at the shelter.

"It was truly a wonderful experience," Montmare told Comme.

Below are the portraits Montmare took at APA! on Wednesday:
