TENNESSEE, USA — Officials in Montgomery County and Nashville have reported six deaths, including one child, as a result of Saturday's storms.
According to the Nashville Emergency Operations Center, three of those deaths were reported in the Metro Nashville area. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department identified two adults and one child were killed in Madison during Saturday’s tornado. The Nashville EOC and OEM are assessing the damage and looking for people in the Nesbitt Lane area.
Nashville EOC said Nesbitt Lane has severe damage and that the Nashville Fire Department is on the scene to assess.
Three other reported deaths, two adults and one child, were in Clarksville after the tornado touched down in the area.
“This is a sad day for our community," Clarksville Mayor Wes Golden said. "We are praying for those who are injured, lost loved ones, and lost their homes. This community pulls together like no other and we will be here until the end.
WSMV said 23 people were injured during the storms and received treatment at local hospitals.
Emergency crews are searching for stranded people as several areas in the Clarksville and Montgomery County area had homes flattened after a confirmed tornado passed through on Saturday evening.
People were reportedly trapped inside homes after the tornado, WSMV said.
In response to the tornado damage, Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts has declared a state of emergency and curfew for Saturday and Sunday. Pitts made the statement below:
"In accordance with Section 1-1204 of the Official City Code, and in light of the natural disaster occurring today, I am declaring the City of Clarksville to be under a State of Emergency. In furtherance of the State of Emergency, I find it is necessary for the health, safety, and welfare of the community to place the City under a Curfew for tonight (12/9) and tomorrow night (12/10) beginning at 9 p.m."
