With a recent dip in temperatures across Central Texas, it's important to understand how to layer up properly.

AUSTIN, Texas — Temperatures have reached seasonal lows throughout Central Texas, with many school districts canceling classes or calling for delays.

When dealing with such extremes, it's important to know how to layer up properly, especially when it comes to kids who may be walking to school or waiting for the bus.

For extreme cold, experts recommend wearing waterproof boots, a warm hat, gloves and a face mask, along with at least two layers of pants and three or more layers of shirts.

As temperatures rise slightly but remain cold, individuals should wear one to two layers of pants and two to three layers of shirts, while everything else remains the same. However, a face mask is more optional at this point. You should also stay away from metal surfaces unless wearing gloves.

As a general rule, stay inside as much as possible.
