Data indicates even more droughts could be in Texas' future

New data from NOAA reveals rising temperatures and higher likelihood for droughts across Texas.

TEXAS, USA — Editor's note: The above video is related to an October 2021 report that predicted more heat and extreme weather for Texas in the coming years.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released a climate report on Tuesday to provide an update on changes within the state climate. Ultimately, these updates are used to track and monitor major trends that could impact the region.

Topics of discussion included the average state temperature and the potential for certain extreme weather events for the state of Texas. Three key messages stood out regarding our local climate.

The first pertained to the state's average temperature. Since the beginning of the 20th century, temperatures in Texas have increased almost 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit. While that number might not sound impressive, it can have serious impacts whenever we view it on a global scale. An increase in temperatures will increase the likelihood of drier soils, naturally occurring droughts and extended dry spells.

The second key message involved the expected increase in extreme precipitation events. It's worth noting that it is unclear whether or not precipitation changes will occur throughout the entire year.

The third message focused on the expected increase in hurricane intensity and rainfall for the state of Texas. Sea level rise is projected to increase the frequency of flooding and storm surge height. While the frequency of severe weather events is still uncertain, those that do occur could be stronger.

According to NOAA, all state summaries are reviewed anonymously by at least two experts for each state. Additionally, state reports underwent reviews by the NOAA Technical Support Unit staff as well as the NOAA Regional Climate Center for each area.
