AUSTIN, Texas — NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) has released their winter weather predictions as we approach the start of the winter season.

Temperature outlook

The agency is calling for a warmer-than-normal winter for the nation's southern region, including all of Texas.

The only areas we are expecting to have a cooler-than-normal winter is the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies.

What is "normal" for Central Texas?

In December, our average high temperature is 63.9 degrees, while the average low is 43.4 degrees. January is typically our coldest month of the year, with an average high of 62.5 degrees and an average low of 41.8 degrees. We start to warm up by February, with an average high of 66.5 degrees and an average low of 45.8 degrees.

Precipitation outlook

Precipitation wise, drier-than-normal conditions are expected for Central Texas. The further southwest you live in the Lone Star State, the drier it's expected to be. An average winter season for us in Central Texas brings about 7.25 inches of rain from December through February.

Drought outlook

Widespread severe to exceptional drought continues to dominate the western half of the continental U.S., Northern Plains and the Missouri River Basin. Drought conditions are forecast to persist and develop in the Southwest and Southern Plains. The Pacific Northwest, northern California, the upper Midwest and Hawaii are most likely to experience drought improvement.
