TEXAS, USA — We all know the past two hurricane seasons have been busy, but a map showing all the land falling storms that have hit the U.S. really puts things in perspective.
The most recent storm is of course Nicholas, which made landfall on the eastern Matagorda Peninsula on Tuesday as a Category 1 hurricane. Nicholas is the third storm to make a Texas landfall over the past two hurricane seasons.
The other two systems are Hurricane Hanna and Tropical Storm Beta, both of which took place during the record breaking 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
The 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season was the most active on record, producing 30 named storms including 14 hurricanes and seven major hurricanes. The 2021 season has now produced 14 total named storms.
All of this tropical activity has resulted in 19 tropical storm or hurricane landfalls. Louisiana has been the most hard hit state, taking a direct hit from six named storms in the past two years. Three of these storms were major hurricanes, including two high-end Category 4 storms in Ida and Laura.
As far as the rest of this season, we remain near the climatological peak of the season and tropics remain active. Remember the Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.
The climatological peak was Sept. 10, but there's also a secondary late season peak in October.
The KVUE Storm Team will continue to closely monitor the tropics through the rest of the season.
