A bit cooler for Monday; highs back in the 70s by mid-week

The next couple of mornings will be pretty chilly, but the afternoons still look pleasant to start the week.

AUSTIN, Texas — Monday trends a touch cooler, overall the forecast still looks pleasant as we start the new week with highs in the 60s through Tuesday.

The next couple mornings will be chilly though, with Monday morning starts around 40 degrees in Austin. The coldest spots across the Hill Country will be close to a light freeze. Even the afternoon will trend a bit cooler for Monday, but overall still looks very nice with highs in the mid-60s under a mostly sunny sky.

By Tuesday afternoon, highs will be trending warmer again as we return to a more southerly flow. In fact, by Wednesday and Thursday, we have highs back in the 70s. Some locations could even hit 80 degrees Thursday afternoon ahead of our next cold front.

That front will move through Thursday night and Friday morning. The latest models have really backed off on the rain chances with this system, so for now, we'll mention just a 10% shower chance late Thursday and early Friday. Behind the front, it looks like highs will be in the 60s for Friday and Saturday afternoon, but there is still a decent amount of uncertainty in the forecast beyond Thursday.

That brings us to the chance for some much more substantial cold air by Sunday next weekend. The latest computer models are hinting that an arctic front could pass through here in Central Texas Saturday into Sunday. The current forecast calls for highs only in the low 50s by this time next weekend, but this part of the forecast is still subject to change.

The bottom line is that it looks like the door will at least be open for a pretty good cooldown Sunday into early next week. The 8- to 14-day temperature outlook from the Climate Prediction Center suggests that cooler-than-average temperatures are likely for Central Texas in the Feb. 8 through Feb. 14 time frame.
