Beneficial rain to start May? That's definitely possible

AUSTIN, Texas — Is anyone as tired of the drought as we are?

Well, it's possible we could get a reprieve during the first few weeks of May, which is the wettest month on average.

Here's what to know.

Precipitation

The entire central third of the country, including Texas, has a slight chance of above-average precipitation. This is especially important as May is the wettest month on average, with an average of 5.04 inches of rain. The next closest month, October, see 3.91 inches on average.

We will take all the rain we can get, as much of the Hill Country is in advanced-stage drought, including southern Blanco and Gillespie counties, which are under an "extreme" level of drought.

Temperature

While we're at it, temperature looks to be about average in May. With an average high of 86.9 degrees, it is possible we see a couple of 90s next month, but there could also be some lower 80s or upper 70s to start the month.

Cloud cover and how much rain we get will dictate how the temperatures play out for May, as clouds limit radiational heating.
