Timeline: Severe storms possible through Friday morning

The highest severe weather threat will be across the Hill Country, where storms could produce hail and strong winds.

AUSTIN, Texas — The KVUE Weather Team is tracking a chance for a few severe storms across Central Texas through late Friday morning. Widespread severe weather is not expected, but we could certainly have a few rowdy storms across the Hill Country before sunrise.

The severe weather threat is low for the Austin metro and most of the Interstate 35 corridor. Any severe weather threat shifts east of I-35 after sunrise.

The latest storm outlook from the Storm Prediction Center has expanded the "slight" – level 2 of 5 – severe weather risk to include most of Mason, Llano, Burnet and Gillespie counties.

The main threat will be hail potential followed by strong winds. The tornado threat is very low but not completely zero.

Timing: When to expect storms

Storms will first move into our western Hill Country counties around 2 or 3 a.m. Friday. Storms will likely be at their strongest as they first move into the KVUE area. Mason, Llano and Gillespie counties have the highest likelihood of seeing a strong to severe storm.

Models continue to show that storms will weaken as they approach the I-35 corridor and the Austin metro. This will also be a broken line of rain, so it's not even a guarantee that everyone gets rain.

Most storms should be tame as they arrive in the metro, but northwest Travis and Williamson counties still have a low chance for severe weather.

Storms will be moving into the Coastal Plains and impacting areas east of I-35 between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., and again should be in the process of weakening. By mid morning, all of the rain is gone and the afternoon will be dry, breezy and warm.

Turning cooler this weekend

A fairly strong cold front blows through Central Texas Friday evening. This won' t bring more rain with it, but it will kick up the wind and bring cooler than average temperatures for this weekend.

The KVUE Weather Team will continue to monitor this developing forecast.
