FAYETTE COUNTY, Texas — The Fayette County Sheriff's Office is warning drivers to beware as many roads remain closed Wednesday afternoon.
“Especially if there's barricades up, do not drive around the barricades," said Lt. David Beyer of the Fayette County Sheriff's Office. "And if it's a low water crossing, don't try to cross it. You don't know what's underneath the water. You can't tell. You can't see, you know, the road could be washed out.”
Lt. Beyer said at around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, a crew had to rescue an 18-wheeler that became stuck on Rocky Creek Road. Then about 12 hours later at around 2 p.m., the sheriff's office had to administer a water rescue for a person who capsized a boat on Cummins Creek and was hanging on to a tree.
Beyer also said fields in the area flooded more than normal.
"It's been such a hard rain, such a fast rain, you know the last two days," Beyer said. "It hasn't had time to drain out of the field yet or anything, so it's a little bit more than usual."
The KVUE Weather Team has been keeping a close eye on the southeast portion of our viewing area, including Fayette County, as widespread rain has continued throughout the day. As of 7 a.m. Wednesday, Fayette County had received anywhere from four to eight inches of rain in the previous 12 hours.
The sheriff's office said according to ATXFloods.com, which tracks road closures in the Austin area, dozens of roads are shut off within Fayette County. As of noon Wednesday, the following roads or sections of roads were listed as closed on ATXFloods:
