Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy having surgery Wednesday, team says

DALLAS — Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy is having surgery for appendicitis on Wednesday, the team announced.

McCarthy was experiencing abdominal pain Wednesday morning "that warranted further evaluation and resulted in a diagnosis of acute appendicitis," team officials said in a statement.

McCarthy was scheduled to have surgery Wednesday afternoon and be released afterward, the team said. McCarthy expects to still coach Sunday night, when the Cowboys host the Eagles at AT&T Stadium.

The team said the Cowboys' three coordinators would be running practice Wednesday and until McCarthy returns to the team.

More information about McCarthy's status was not available.

The 9-3 Cowboys have a pivotal NFC East matchup against the Eagles, who lead the division and are currently the top team in the NFC. With a win, the Cowboys would match Philadelphia's record at 10-3 and get back in the hunt for the division championship, and home-field advantage in the playoffs.

The Cowboys have won four straight games, and six of their last seven, the one loss being to the Eagles in Philadelphia on Nov. 5.

This is a developing story. Check back for more information.
