Tre Johnson, consensus top 5 player in class of 2024, commits to play basketball at University of Texas

Johnson is listed as the top shooting guard prospect in the country, and the No. 1 recruit from the state of Texas for his class.

DALLAS — Tre Johnson, one of the top basketball players in the country, has committed to play college basketball at the University of Texas at Austin next year, according to new Longhorns head coach Rodney Terry.

Johnson, a 6-foot-6 guard from Dallas, is a unanimous five-star recruit and a consensus top 5 high school basketball player in the country for the 2024 graduating class. Recruit-ranking services from ESPN, Rivals and On3 each rank him as the No. 4 player in his class while 24/7 Sports ranks him at No. 5.

No matter the recruiting service, Johnson is listed as the top shooting guard prospect in the country, and the No. 1 recruit from the state of Texas for his class.

Johnson played his freshman through junior seasons of high school basketball at Lake Highlands High School in Dallas. As a junior, he averaged 21.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while leading the Wildcats to a 34-3 record and a Class 6A state title. He was also named MaxPreps' National Junior of the Year and earned the title of Mr. Basketball in Texas.

For his senior year, Johnson transferred from Lake Highlands to Link Academy in Branson, Mo. A boarding school known for its sports programs, Link's Facebook page describes it as offering "a gap year experience that is empowering future leaders to impact the world for Christ."

Johnson is the third member of the 2024 high school class to sign a letter of intent to play basketball at UT next year -- a group that also includes a fellow North Texas product in 6-foot-8 forward Nic Codie from Newman Smith High School in Carrollton.

Johnson's commitment is a major coup for UT head men's basketball coach Rodney Terry, who was only named the team's head coach last March. Terry led the Longhorns to the Elite 8 while serving as the team's interim coach for the majority of last season. Terry replaced former head coach Chris Beard, who was fired in January after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting his fiancée. The Travis County District Attorney's Office later filed a motion to dismiss that case.

WFAA broadcasted one of Johnson's games as part of its Tuesday Night Hoops series last season. You can watch the entirety of that game -- in which Johnson led Lake Highlands to a 69-47 win over Richardson --below.
