AUSTIN — Young students in the Austin area will be able to continue using public transportation around the city for free year round.

CapMetro board of directors announced Thursday that it has made its "Kids Ride Free" pilot program permanent, meaning students in kindergarten through 12th grade won't have to pay to ride CapMetro's buses or the Metrorail.

The program started on a temporary basis in June, and officials said they've "received overwhelmingly positive feedback" from both children and parents about the program since then.

Students have to show their school ID to take advantage of the opportunity.
