Celine Dion makes surprise Grammys appearance amid Stiff-person syndrome battle

Before she announced the winner, Dion recalled winning that same award at the Grammys over 20 years ago.

LOS ANGELES — Singer Celine Dion made a surprise appearance at the end of the Grammy Awards to present album of the year.

Dion presented one of the night's biggest award to Taylor Swift for her album "Midnights." Earlier in the night, Swift announced her new album "Tortured Poets Department."

Before she announced the winner, Dion recalled winning that same award over 20 years ago.

It's been over a year since Dion announced her diagnosis with a rare neurological disorder to the world.

What is Stiff-person syndrome?

Stiff-person syndrome is a condition characterized by muscles that tense uncontrollably, and a heightened sensitivity to stimuli such as noise, touch, and emotional distress, which can set off muscle spasms, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

"Unfortunately these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life," Dion said at the time. "Sometimes causing difficulty when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal chords to sing the way I'm used to."

"When I say I'm happy to be here, I really mean it, from my heart," the music icon shared at the Grammys.

Back in May, the singer cancelled all of her scheduled 2023 and 2024 shows.

The global star made a rare public appearance at an NHL game with her sons in Las Vegas in November.

Even as the music world got a surprise public appearance from Dion, the album of the year category faced criticism from inside the theater.

Jay-Z, who was awarded the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award Sunday night, used his acceptance speech to discuss his wife, Beyoncé and her career. Jay-Z noted that she had more Grammys than any other artist in history, but has never won album of the year.

During his speech, Jay-Z heavily suggested the Grammys have a history of placing rap on the backburner – or at the very least, not in the televised version of the show.

How many Grammys does Beyonce have?

Beyoncé has 32 Grammy Awards,, most ever by any artist. She’s been nominated 88 times. Four of those nominations were for Album of the Year, but she never won that honor.
