New water meter system will soon available for Georgetown Water Utility customers

The project also enables customers to track live usage with the new consumption portal.

GEORGETOWN, Texas — Changes are coming soon for Georgetown Water Utility customers.

As early as this fall, the company plans to introduce 23,500 new smart water meters with an Advanced Metering Infrastructure, or AMI, system. Customers will also be able to track their individual water usage online with the help of a Consumption Portal.

By accessing consumption levels in real time, Georgetown residents can adjust water usage, find leaks and make any necessary changes in the moment instead of waiting until the next bill arrives.

The project is set to start this September with plans to be completed in approximately one year.

As the new water meters are added, customers might see a short pause in services. However, doors will be marked with notices once the upgrades have been made.

RELATED: Georgetown may not have enough water in 6 years, according to city report

In recent years, Georgetown has worked to encourage its residents to conserve water.

In 2022, a water utility consumer confidence report stated the city's "drinking water meets or exceeds all federal (EPA) drinking water requirements." The information was gathered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which requires various tests of contaminants, lead and copper, and disinfection in water, among other factors.

In 2023, the city created a Drought Contingency Plan "to conserve the available water supply, protect the integrity of water supply facilities, and to minimize the adverse impacts of water supply shortage or other water supply emergency conditions." According to the plan, water waste is prohibited in city limits.

As Georgetown Water Utility makes these changes, customers will soon have more direct access to information regarding individual usage.
