Volunteers help clean Austin parks

Thousands volunteered to clean up trash around Austin's parks, as part of the "It's My Park Day" clean-up event.

AUSTIN — Thousands spent their Saturday collecting garbage around Austin's parks.

The Austin Parks Foundation organized a "It's My Park Day" clean-up event for 80 parks across the city of Austin. The idea was to get people out of the house so they can help clean up their environment.

"I like to help nature, so it's pretty important to me," Isabel Rampy, who volunteered at Festival Beach Park in East Austin, said.

Alison Watkins with the Austin Parks Foundation said, "After all the rain we had in this city, to have a nice day to give back means a lot to the city and to the recreation department."

Watkins said the event reminds people to be mindful of the space they live in.

"It's important for the earth to look good and not just be a big pile of trash," she said. "Whether you're a walker or runner, we want to be able to give back to those places we care about so deeply."
